Your current age: 27
Your age when you got your dog: 25
What do you do?: NYC Actor/Singer
Dog’s name: Teddy
Dog's age: 2 years
We got Teddy from a small farm in PA from a family who had a tiny litter. He was 2 months old when we picked him up, and we drove from Brooklyn to go meet him.
Why did you want a dog?
I've always been a BIG dog person, but was never able to have one growing up. Once I got my own place in the city with my boyfriend at the time, we felt like we could finally make the commitment, and now we can't imagine life without Teddy.
How has having a dog changed your life?
That question always makes me smile. I can answer it with this: Teddy is family. Truly. 100%. When my friends and I go out in the city, Teddy comes with. When I'm going on an adventure, Teddy is there. When I'm rehearsing for a big audition, Teddy listens. He's my best friend, my wing-man, my stay up late, my wake up early, my work-out buddy, my dinner date, my secret keeper, and he's so great with people, that we meet new friends wherever we go. He has made me see life in a whole new way, and I can't thank him enough for that.
How do/did you deal with having a dog in your twenties, may it be now or previously? What is/was your daily routine? Any hard times? Unique characteristics about your dog?:
I guess at first it was a big change! Teddy was/is my first dog, and when Teddy was a puppy, it was a FULL time job training him and get him used to our schedule in the city. He hated crate training, and I remember spending many sleepless nights next to him. He would cry and cry when we shut the crate door on him, so eventually we just left it open, and I slept on the couch, while he curled up close to me in a pen that took over our whole living room. We were so dedicated to him. I spent many hours researching training and tricks on youtube, and we'd practice together, Teddy and I. I'm so happy to say that all those long hours really paid off. He is one smart cookie, and boy does he know it. He can play dead, speak, high five, ring bells, and even open the refrigerator and get you a Modelo. And now? After about 2 years? He sleeps in longer than I do and has adjusted to the New York City lifestyle like a pro. He rides the subway, isn't afraid of loud noises, or fast cars, or fireworks, or crazy people who shout random words on the street. He loves street food (hot dogs are a personal fav.), chilling with people from Inwood to the Seaport, and poses like a model at events in the city. He's a real New Yorker now, and we love it!
What are some of your favorite things to do with your dog?
Hmmm you know? I think my favorite thing is that moment when I take teddy out to a Prospect Park or Central Park early in the morning or late at night and he can run off leash. Seeing him run at full speed and just loving his life, that makes me the most happy. Oh, and dinner. I love taking Teddy to dinner with me in the city. We eat outside and I'll order lots of fries just to share with him. My closest friends chill with me at local bars and cafes and we all love when Teddy comes with us. We meet a lot of people as they stop to say hello. It's always wonderful when he's around.
Does anyone help you take care of your dog while at work or school?
I co-parent Teddy with my ex-boyfriend, and we always make sure that he is safe and looked after. If I have a long day at work ahead, I'll call my ex and make sure that we focus on Teddy so that he is never home for too long by himself. It always works out very well, as we both have varying schedules. Teddy is like our kid, so we are always ready to be there for him at anytime.
If you are in a relationship, how does your partner feel about your dog?
I'm currently single, but I have a big rule when it comes to dating: Must love dogs! It's just a must.
