We got Louis as a puppy from a small town Labradoodle breeder in Illinois.
Why did you want a dog?:
I've always been obsessed with dogs. Always. My family always had cats and dogs growing up. So, when I moved out of my parents' house and moved in with my boyfriend, I was really missing that animal companionship. On top of that, my boyfriend had just accepted a new job that had him traveling every other week. I was in a brand new city, 4 hours away from my friends and family, and I was really missing my dogs back home. Once I finally got my boyfriend on board with the idea of getting a puppy, I spent hours and hours trying to find the perfect dog for us. My boyfriend grew up with a poodle and I grew up with yellow/black labs, so we agreed on a Labradoodle! Once we found a breeder close enough to us, found out she had a litter that would be available in 2 months, and we saw a few pictures of the puppies, we found our buddy Louis!
How has having a dog changed your life?:
Along with the companionship, having a dog made me responsible for another life besides my own. Louis gets me up every morning at 5:00am no matter what. He forces me to go outside, rain or shine. He keeps me accountable! On the flip side, he has made me appreciate the littlest things in life. I could come home from the worst day of my life and there he is, jumping and crying because he is just SO HAPPY that I'm home. He's my biggest fan!
How do/did you deal with having a dog in your twenties, may it be now or previously? What is/was your daily routine? Any hard times? Unique characteristics about your dog?:
The hardest part for us was the puppy stage. Puppies are so cute and fun until they poop and pee all over your apartment and put holes in all of your clothes. We also lived on the top floor of our apartment building, so potty training wasn't easy! I was never a "night life" kind of 21 year old, so I never felt like I was missing out on anything by staying home on a Saturday night with my dog. My boyfriend and I decided to get a puppy when we did because I was taking a majority of online classes at the time, so I was home with Louis almost 24/7.
What are some of your favorite things to do with your dog?:
Louis is down for anything. If we're going for a ride in the car, he is too. If we're laying on the couch all afternoon, he is too. If we're going to get the mail, he is too. Des Moines is a small city, but it has a lot to offer. A lot of the shops are dog friendly, so Louis can tag along too. We love the dog parks here, so that's something we do pretty often.
Does anyone help you take care of your dog while at work or school?:
Between my school schedule and my boyfriend's work schedule, Louis is rarely home alone (he is so spoiled and he knows it).
If you are in a relationship, how does your partner feel about your dog?:
My boyfriend is just as obsessed with Louis as I am, maybe even more! We do occasionally argue over who has to take Louis out every now and then, but overall, getting a dog made our relationship ever stronger.
